The University of Alabama at Birmingham has selected Caroline V. Coburn, DNP, MS, APRN, ANP-BC, as a 2021 Visionary Leader. Her exemplary leadership, innovation, and far-reaching impact on nursing and healthcare has set her apart from more than 100 nominees and earned her recognition from her alma mater. This elite accreditation is given to UAB School of Nursing graduates whose commitment and accomplishments have set them apart. Dr. Coburn’s nomination has been bestowed on only 60 other alumni who were named Visionary Leaders in 2010.
Alumni from the UAB School of Nursing have been integral in shaping the nursing profession. UAB recognizes its renowned graduates and their mark on the program by honoring alumni as Visionary Leaders. Nominees are selected by colleagues and peers for their outstanding achievements and leadership abilities.
Since 2004, Dr. Coburn has been a Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing faculty member as a Clinical Instructor and Assistant Professor. She currently practices cardiovascular nursing in the Heart Failure Clinic at the Atlanta VA Medical Center. In addition, she provides volunteer care at the Emory Nurse Practitioner-led clinic for refugees.
Dr. Coburn’s work also centers on ambulatory nursing and interprofessional collaboration. Her work with clinical partners, student groups and researchers support ongoing international initiatives to address non-communicable chronic diseases. She currently participates in two national grants: the Emory Faculty in the VA Nursing-Academic Partnership for Graduate Education (VANAP-GE), and as co-investigator in the Emory Nursing Academic-Practice Partnership in Primary Care grant (CAPACITY).
As a Visionary Leader award recipient, Dr. Coburn will be honored during a series of virtual events to be held in April, celebrating her accomplishments as well as the 70th anniversary of the UAB School of Nursing. She will also be featured alongside other recipients in the UAB School of Nursing magazine and website.
